More Complex Than You May Think

We have done quite incredible things, and we would love to do more.

In the last few days, the first government portals have gone live where businesses can apply for grants and money etc. Many people have complained about how long this has taken. That is understandable because their income depends on it. Other people complained it wasn`t working and it is equally frustrating.

As a web development company, we specialise in booking systems and management systems. Typically, such systems take months to code, not weeks. So we are looking at this development slightly differently. We think it is a miracle that the development team have managed to achieve this in such a short period. Sadly, it is inevitable that there are major teething problems. The development teams were given only a few weeks to develop a complicated system and they did not have time to properly build and properly test their systems.

Our own experience is when you build booking systems, everything goes fine when you are in the confined spaces of our own office and the testing that is happening is done in a controlled environment. But when the general public is let loose, they start to do things which are not anticipated. For example, in the earlier days of my development as a web designer, I found a lot of people were inputting what appeared to be wrong figures. Upon investigation, they were typing prices with a pound sign rather than just as numbers as I had expected them to. The database field was set up as a numerical field, but the submitted data was not numerical, and the database entry was simply zero.

All this goes to show that programming and web development is more complex than some may think.
